Resources for Recruitment

The CU-ADVANCE Center awards Faculty Development Grants to departments wishing to recruit promising women scientists and engineers by funding the following:

  1. external or at-Cornell post-doctoral research prior to starting in a Cornell tenure-track position;
  2. teaching release to provide time to develop scholarship;
  3. a research associate; or
  4. a research release to gain teaching experience, all of which would allow them to become competitive for an upcoming opening.

The women receiving the grants will be ideally suited for a faculty opening at the end of the grant period.

Resources for Faculty

  • Professional Development Grants
  • The PDGs are aimed to heighten the professional visibility of pre-tenure women faculty in preparation for promotion and tenure by funding travel to a senior colleague’s institution or bringing a senior researcher to the applicant’s lab.

    The grant can also be used to fund professional training opportunities, e.g., training on specialized databases or equipment. Grants are generally limited to $1,500 and can be used towards travel, accommodations and childcare.

    Faculty apply, with a supporting letter from the department. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.Application form

  • Research Initiation Awards
  • The RIAs provide support for activities in support of promotion to full professorships. The grant’s value of up to $50,000 is available to associate professors and can be used towards teaching relief, support personnel, or field work.

    Faculty should apply, with a supporting letter from the department. Application deadline is the last Friday in January each year. Application form

  • CU-ADVANCE is happy to announce a new pilot program for 2009-2010: The Grant Development Pilot Program for Review of Revised Proposals.
  • The program is designed to help Cornell faculty succeed in obtaining grants, and is modeled after the College of Human Ecology’s Faculty Grant Development Program.

    The CU-ADVANCE Center will offer a $500 honorarium to a colleague external to Cornell, who agrees to review a Cornell faculty member’s completed grant application before it is submitted or resubmitted to an outside granting agency. Application form

    Best Practices for Search Committees

    This page is designed to provide Department Chairs, Search Chairs and any faculty participating in faculty searches at Cornell with specific tools and ideas. The resources for effective searches featured on this page are based on research data and on institutional evidence from universities that have proven results from implementing the strategies that are suggested here. The guidelines to be found here for pool development, establishing search committees, planning, conducting and evaluating searches, and minimizing bias in the search process are not mandated by Cornell University, but are strongly encouraged as best practices with proven positive outcomes.
