Resources for Recruitment

The CU-ADVANCE Center awards Faculty Development Grants to departments wishing to recruit promising women scientists and engineers by funding 1) external or at-Cornell post-doctoral research prior to starting in a Cornell tenure-track position; 2) teaching release to provide time to develop scholarship; 3) a research associate; or 4) a research release to gain teaching experience, all of which would allow them to become competitive for an upcoming opening. The women receiving the grants will be ideally suited for a faculty opening at the end of the grant period.

The CU-ADVANCE Center has established two competitive named Lecture Series to help with recruitment of highly qualified women faculty members by providing a prestigious invitation and professional networking opportunities for both the visitor and for Cornell faculty.

  • The Carolyn Baldwin Morrison Lecture Series consists of up to 4 lectures per year, one each in engineering, physical sciences, life sciences, and social sciences. Candidates should be distinguished early-career women (within 3 years of tenure).
  • The yearly Barbara McClintock Distinguished Lecture will bring a young (pre-tenure) outstanding female faculty member who was a Cornell undergraduate to campus for a broad-reaching technical seminar and for an experiential seminar for undergraduates.

Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis as lecture slots are still available. Nomination guidelines

Nominators are encouraged to contact the CU-ADVANCE Center at advance@cornell.edu to discuss potential nominees and nomination requirements prior to submitting a nomination.

Best Practices for Search Committees Link

This page is designed to provide Department Chairs, Search Chairs and any faculty participating in faculty searches at Cornell with specific tools and ideas for effective searches. The resources for effective searches featured on this page are based on research data and on institutional evidence from universities that have proven results from implementing the strategies that are suggested here. The guidelines to be found here for pool development, establishing search committees, planning, conducting and evaluating searches, and minimizing bias in the search process are not mandated by Cornell University, but are strongly encouraged as best practices with proven positive outcomes.
